Tennessee pharmacy law
A patient is picking up a prescription for an eight (8) day supply of Lunesta at a pharmacy. The patient is unknown to the pharmacy staff and has forgotten all identification at home. Which of the following is true regarding picking up this prescription?
The requirement to show identification or be known to pharmacy staff applies to more than a 7-day supply of opioids, benzodiazepines, zolpidem, barbiturates, and carisoprodol. Eszopiclone (Lunesta) is a Schedule IV hypnotic, but it is not included in the regulation.
Federal pharmacy law
A patient just home from the hospital with a broken leg can't come to the pharmacy to pick up a Schedule II prescription that's already on file. They ask whether the pharmacy can mail it to their house. How should the pharmacist respond?
Federal rules allow pharmacies to mail controlled substances, including Schedule II, to the patient when packaging and shipping requirements are met. The drug name must not be shown on the outer package.
